Welcome...

First of all, let us get the spelling right! The correct spelling is 'Sjögren's Syndrome', (note the thingy over the ö ). I have used both the formal spelling and 'Sjogrens's Syndrome' and the abbreivation 'SJS' throughtout this web site, to ensure that people can find this free information resource site using the search engines.

So, What is Sjogren's Syndrome...

Sjogren's (pronounced 'SHOW-grins' and known as 'SJS') is, unfortunately, very poorly understood. Dentist's seem to know more about it than your typical General Practioner (GP) in the UK. The next time you visit you dentist, mention that you have (or think you may have) Sjogren's Syndrome and you will find that they know all about it. GP's have so much to cover, they cannot be expected to have a full understanding of everything, which is why they are called 'General' Practioners.

Not only are the root causes of SJS unknown, but there seems to be much disagreement on what should form the criteria for diagnosing Sjogren's Syndrome. There are big differences between the UK, EEC and even within the US. This is most important for those unfortunate people who, as a result of SJS, are incapacitated to such an extent that they can no longer work. Claiming 'disability' support for many SJS sufferers has proved to be a uphill struggle and that, with their illness, makes life even more difficult. This web site provides information that I hope will help.
